Chief Deposit Officer - Bank of the San Juans Married

The hardest part was declining the Nobel Prize, but it was too much of a distraction, especially with the imminent release of my six CD box-set of bagpipe and sackbut duets. After inventing and patenting both the pound (“#”) and the star (“*”) keys on phones, I used royalties to fund DNA research on Cameroon’s reclusive albino pygmy goats. Good fortune smiled again when an unsolicited email informed me that I had won an Italian lottery that I hadn’t played – but a week later, $46 million was transferred by Western Union. At the time, Bitcoins were a buck each, so now the proceeds are worth quite a lot. So I paid off the mortgage, bought a Chevy Equinox and got some Chinese take-out and a Big Gulp of Mountain Dew.

But all that is old news.

Am still in the resort town of Durango, Colorado. Married to the wonderful and indefatigable Amy Wendland, professor of art and design at Fort Lewis College. Toiling daily as the chief deposit officer for Bank of the San Juans, a community bank with 19 branches across Colorado. Surprisingly or not so much, I’m still involved in fake news, writing the weekly humor column called “Action Line” for the Durango Herald. No action actually takes place, just for the record. Have become a passionate if not ruthless horticulturalist, with an obsession for xeric rock gardening and for spring-blooming bulbs. Seriously. Some 12,000 bulbs bloom in the yard throughout the year. It’s all a bit much.

Life is so good!  We are here in the Dominican Republic for three years while my husband is serving as the Mission President for the Santo Domingo East Mission, in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.   We are having so much fun! We serve over 200 stripling warriors who are working hard and seeing miracles every single day.  The people here are so believing!  “Of course God loves us.  Of course He sends prophets to guide us.  Of course He would appear personally to a young man with a really important question.  Of course there is a prophet on the earth today!” They believe it all! Our missionaries have so many people to teach they won’t even set an appointment until the people first attend church.  It’s truly a blessed country and we are blessed beyond measure to be serving here.
